Unable to install FTP Folders when you install Internet Explorer 6

This article was previously published under Q299893

SYMPTOMS

In Internet Explorer 6 Setup, a message is displayed in the Component Options dialog box that states that the Internet Explorer Browsing Enhancements option "adds Graphical FTP Helper." However, the graphical file transfer protocol (FTP) Helper (also known as FTP Folders, Web-Based FTP, or Folder View for FTP sites) is not installed or updated by Internet Explorer 6 Setup.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the description of the Internet Explorer Browsing Enhancements option during Setup incorrectly states that the Graphical FTP Helper is installed. By design, Internet Explorer 6 does not install or update the Graphical FTP Helper (the Msieftp.dll file). The Internet Explorer Browsing Enhancements option in Internet Explorer 6 only installs support for font embedding and the Identity Manager (for use with Outlook Express Identities) on Microsoft Windows 98, Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition, Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me), and Microsoft Windows NT 4.0.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, if you are running Windows 98 or Windows NT 4.0, you can install the Graphical FTP Helper by installing the Internet Explorer Browsing Enhancements option with Internet Explorer version 5.x, or upgrade your operating system to Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows Me, or Microsoft Windows 2000.

If you are running Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows Me, or Windows 2000, the Graphical FTP Helper is already installed.

For additional information about installing FTP Folders in Internet Explorer 5.x, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

NOTE: If you have already installed Internet Explorer 6 on Windows 98 or Windows NT 4.0, you must remove it before you install the Internet Explorer Browsing Enhancements option with Internet Explorer 5.x.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

Because Internet Explorer 6 installs only the core browser, scripting, and Outlook Express 6 files on Windows 2000, the Install Minimal, or customize your browser option is not available during installation. Therefore, the Component Options dialog box is not available for you to select the Internet Explorer Browsing Enhancements option on Windows 2000.

The Graphical FTP Helper is installed when you install the following Microsoft products:
  • Internet Explorer 5.x
  • Windows 98 Second Edition
  • Windows Me
  • Windows 2000

APPLIES TO
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0, when used with:
    • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
    • Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server
    • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional Edition
    • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
    • Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0 Standard Edition
    • Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0, Terminal Server Edition
    • Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 4.0 Developer Edition
    • Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition
    • Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition
    • Microsoft Windows 98 Standard Edition
