Cannot Enter Standby or Hibernate After Computer Docks

SYMPTOMS

When your computer enters Standby or Hibernation mode, it may stop responding (hang). Note that this behavior only occurs after you dock your computer. Also, if you press CTRL+ALT+DELETE, MSGSRV32 is listed as "not responding".

CAUSE

The behavior occurs if the computer has the standard floppy disk controller driver and a universal serial bus (USB) storage device (such as a USB memory stick drive) driver loaded. As part of the standby and hibernate process, a media check command is sent to storage devices by the Msgsrv32 process. The problem in this scenario is that the USB storage device has already been turned off. This causes Msgsrv32 to wait forever for completion of the command, and this causes the computer to hang.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, disable the standard floppy disk controller before the standby or hibernate process begins:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click System.
  2. On the Device Manager tab, click Standard Floppy Disk Controller, and then click Properties.
  3. On the General tab, click to select the Disable in this hardware profile check box, click OK, and then click Close.
