Adobe Acrobat does not open .PDF files in the same window with the 64-bit version of Internet Explorer
This article was previously published under Q305836
When you open an Adobe Acrobat .pdf file by using the
64-bit version of Internet Explorer 6, Acrobat opens the .pdf file in a new
window.
This behavior occurs because Acrobat installs a 32-bit
ActiveX control (pdf.ocx) that enables Acrobat to open .pdf files within the
Internet Explorer interface. The 64-bit version of Internet Explorer 6 does not
support 32-bit ActiveX controls.
To have Acrobat .pdf files open in the same Internet
Explorer window, use the 32-bit version of Internet Explorer. To open the
32-bit version of Internet Explorer, use either of the following methods:
Method 1
Click
Start, click
Programs, and then click
Internet Explorer (32-Bit).
Method 2
Click
Start, click
Run, and then type the following command in the
Open box, and then click
OK:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\Iexplore.exe
Where
C
is the drive letter on which Internet Explorer is installed.
This
behavior is by design.
APPLIES TO
- Windows Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP
- Windows Internet Explorer 7 for Windows Server 2003
- Windows Internet Explorer 7 for Windows Server 2003 IA64
- Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0, when used with:
- Microsoft Windows Advanced Server, Limited Edition
- Microsoft Windows XP Professional x64 Edition

Community Feedback System
Very often, it takes hours to solve a problem. Very often, you've looked high
and low, and have tried a lot of solutions. When you finally found it, chances
are, it was because someone else helped you. Here's your chance to give back.
Use our community feedback tool to let others know what worked for you and what
didn't.
Please also understand that the community feedback system is not warranted to be
correct, it's simply a system that we've built to let people try and help each
other. If something in a feedback response doesn't make sense to you, or you're
not comfortable making changes that the feedback talks about (like registry
edits), please consult a professional.
Thank you for using kbAlertz.com Feedback System.
