You Cannot Run the Document Management Operation (CheckIn/CheckOut/Publish) If the URL has Double-Byte Characters

This article was previously published under Q306477

SYMPTOMS

In SharePoint Portal Server, when the file URL link in the portal site contains double-byte character set (DBCS) characters, you cannot run the Document Management operation (CheckIn/CheckOut/Publish).

NOTE: Whether this behavior occurs or not depends on the version of Microsoft Internet Explorer on the clients.

CAUSE

The file URL link in the portal site is encoded by canonicalized UTF-8. If the file URL includes DBCS characters, the URL may become much longer than expected, and it may not run the Document Management operation for the URL length limitation in Microsoft Windows 2000 Server Internet Explorer and Microsoft Internet Information Service.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for SharePoint Portal Server 2001. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
