Plus! Speaker Enhancement Command Is Not Displayed on the Tools Menu in Windows Media Player

This article was previously published under Q307669

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Windows Media Player, the Plus! Speaker Enhancement command is not displayed as expected on the Tools menu. As a result, you cannot start Plus! Speaker Enhancement, nor can you view or change your speaker profile in Windows Media Player.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the file that corresponds to the active speaker profile is missing or corrupted. Speaker profile files are stored in the following folder on your computer's hard disk:
Program Files\Microsoft Plus!\Speaker Enhancement\Profiles
For example, if your current speaker profile defines the manufacturer and model of your speakers as Boston Acoustics 7500, and the corresponding speaker profile file (Boston Acoustics BA7500.prm) is missing or corrupted, you experience the behavior described in the "Symptoms" section of this article.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, reinstall (repair) Microsoft Plus! for Windows XP. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Insert your Plus! for Windows XP compact disc into your computer's CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive. Press and hold down the SHIFT key as you insert the compact disc to prevent it from starting automatically.
  2. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  3. Double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  4. Click Microsoft Plus! for Windows XP, and then click Change.
  5. On the Welcome! page, click Next.
  6. Click Repair, and then click Next.

The Repair option reinstalls Plus! for Windows XP by using the settings from the previous installation of the program.
  7. Click Install.
  8. When the installation is complete, click Finish.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION
