Picture It!: The Windows Picture and Fax Viewer starts when you double-click .png file
This article was previously published under Q308900
When you double-click a file, the Microsoft Windows Picture and Fax
Viewer may start instead of the program that you expect to start.
This issue may occur if all the following conditions are
true:
- The file has the file extension ".png."
- The file was created in one of the products listed in the "Applies to" section.
- Your computer is running the Microsoft Windows XP operating
system.
Although Windows XP shows the correct file association with the
.png format, the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer may start anyway.
To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
- Right-click the file, point to Open With, and then click Choose Program.
Note Make sure that the Microsoft Picture It! program that you want is
selected. - Click Always use the selected program to open this
kind of file.
- Click OK.

Community Feedback System
Very often, it takes hours to solve a problem. Very often, you've looked high
and low, and have tried a lot of solutions. When you finally found it, chances
are, it was because someone else helped you. Here's your chance to give back.
Use our community feedback tool to let others know what worked for you and what
didn't.
Please also understand that the community feedback system is not warranted to be
correct, it's simply a system that we've built to let people try and help each
other. If something in a feedback response doesn't make sense to you, or you're
not comfortable making changes that the feedback talks about (like registry
edits), please consult a professional.
Thank you for using kbAlertz.com Feedback System.
