This article was previously published under Q309272
When you are installing SharePoint Portal Server, the installation may not work, and one of the following sets of error messages may be logged in the Eventlog.txt file:
- SharePoint Portal Server: ***ERRORLOG EVENT*** : CVAIComponent, Error 0x80004005: VAIFy failed
SharePoint Portal Server: ***ERRORLOG EVENT*** : CVAIComponent::Install, Error setting up VAI.
- SharePoint Portal Server: ***ERRORLOG EVENT*** : CVAIComponent, Error 0x80072efe: VAIFy failed
SharePoint Portal Server: ***ERRORLOG EVENT*** : CVAIComponent::Install, Error setting up VAI.
This issue can occur if a host header name is specified for each entry in the default Web site.
To resolve this issue:
- Open the properties of the default Web site.
- Click the Web Site tab, and then make sure that the IP Address box contains (All Unassigned).
- Click Advanced.
- In the Multiple identities for this Web Site box, make sure that an entry exists with IP Address set to (All Unassigned), TCP Port set to 80, and Host Header Name blank.
- If this is not the case, either remove the Host Header Name entry for an (All Unassigned) IP Address entry, or create a new entry with IP Address set to (All Unassigned), TCP Port set to 80, and Host Header Name left blank.

Community Feedback System
Very often, it takes hours to solve a problem. Very often, you've looked high
and low, and have tried a lot of solutions. When you finally found it, chances
are, it was because someone else helped you. Here's your chance to give back.
Use our community feedback tool to let others know what worked for you and what
didn't.
Please also understand that the community feedback system is not warranted to be
correct, it's simply a system that we've built to let people try and help each
other. If something in a feedback response doesn't make sense to you, or you're
not comfortable making changes that the feedback talks about (like registry
edits), please consult a professional.
Thank you for using kbAlertz.com Feedback System.
