SYMPTOMS

When you install the Microsoft .NET Framework 1.0 Service Pack 1, you receive the following error message:
The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable. Click OK to try again or enter an alternative path to a folder containing the installation package 'netfx.msi'.
-or-
Click OK to try again or enter an alternative path to a folder containing the installation package 'netfx.msi'.

CAUSE

The link to the cached Windows Installer package for the original framework installation is missing or broken.

RESOLUTION

Extract Netfx.msi from the Dotnetfx.exe file, and then locate Netfx.msi when the error message appears.

NOTE: The following steps assume that you have WinZip installed on your computer. For more information, and for instructions to install WinZip, visit the following WinZip Computing Inc. Web site:

To extract Netfx.msi from Dotnetfx.exe, follow these steps:
  1. On the Windows Component Update CD-ROM, in the Dotnetframework folder, right-click Dotnetfx.exe, and then click Open with Winzip.
  2. Click Netfx.msi, and then click Extract.
  3. In the Folders/drives list box, click to select a folder to extract the file to (such as Desktop), and then click Extract.
  4. Quit WinZip.
