XCCC: You Cannot Use Outlook Web Access to Play an Embedded Sound Wave Object

This article was previously published under Q321583

SYMPTOMS

If you use Microsoft Outlook to record sound waves directly into an e-mail message, you cannot play these sounds back by using Microsoft Outlook Web Access (OWA). If you use Internet Explorer, log on to OWA, and then you open the message, the Volume icon for the sound wave appears. However, if you double-click the message you do not hear the sound.

CAUSE

This problem can occur because Microsoft Exchange Server converts the embedded object to a bitmap (.bmp) image. By design, raw OLE objects cannot be embedded directly into a Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) file.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, record a sound wave file separately, attach the file to an e-mail message, save the sound wave file to the local computer by using the Outlook Web Access client, and then play the sound back.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server.

APPLIES TO
  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Standard Edition
