Visio2002: "Setup Has Detected an Earlier Version of Visio on This Machine" Error Message When You Install Visio Network Equipment (VNE)

This article was previously published under Q324252

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install Visio Network Equipment (VNE) on a computer on which Visio 2002 is installed, you may receive the following error message:
Setup has detected an earlier version of Visio on this machine. Run Setup again and choose the appropriate Visio Network Equipment for your installed Visio version.

Setup will now exit.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because Visio Network Equipment (VNE) is designed for use with Microsoft Visio 2000.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, copy the stencil files that you want to use from the Stencils\Hidden folder on the Visio Network Equipment CD-ROM to a subfolder of the drive:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Visio10\1033\Solutions folder on your hard disk (where drive is the drive on which Windows is installed). Note that Stencil files use a .vss extension.

For example, copy the stencils that you want to an existing folder in the drive:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Visio10\1033\Solutions folder. Or, create a new folder, and then copy the stencil files to it. After you have copied the stencil files to the appropriate folder on your hard disk, follow these steps to open the stencil:
  1. Start Visio, and then open your drawing.
  2. On the File menu, point to Stencils, and then click Open Stencil.
  3. Locate the folder that contains the stencils that you copied, click the stencil that you want, and then click Open.
NOTE: The files that each solution needs are contained in subfolders of the Program Files\Microsoft Office\Visio10\1033\Solutions folder. This the default installation location for the Visio solution files. If you installed Visio to a different location, the path to the Visio solution files on your hard disk is different from the aforementioned path.

MORE INFORMATION

Microsoft Visio Enterprise Network Tools (VENT), the add-in program for Visio 2002 that provides advanced network diagramming solutions, offered a resolution for this issue. However, VENT is no longer available. VENT has been discontinued because of low customer demand. For more information, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
