Installation ended prematurely because of an error.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if any of the following conditions exist:
  • Microsoft Project Server is installed on a different computer then your database server.
  • The Setup program is having trouble connecting to the SQL server where the Project Server database exists.
  • The Setup program is having trouble connecting to the SQL server where the Project Server database is to be created.
Note You may experience this issue even if you select the option to connect to Analysis Services later during Microsoft Project Server Setup.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use the following methods in the order that they appear.

Method 1: Install the SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services DSO component

The Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Decision Support Objects (DSO) component of Analysis Services must be installed on the Microsoft Project Server computer. To install the SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services DSO component, follow these steps:
  1. Insert the SQL Server 2000 CD-ROM in your computer's CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, or connect to a network installation point.
  2. If you are installing from the SQL Server 2000 CD-ROM with AutoPlay selected, click SQL Server 2000 Components in SQL Server 2000 Setup.

    -or-

On the SQL Server 2000 CD-ROM (or network install point), double-click AutoRun.exe.
  3. On the Install Components page, click Install Analysis Services.
  4. Read and then accept the license agreement.
  5. On the Select Components page, click to clear all the check boxes except the Decision Support Objects check box and the Client Components check box.

Note If you install DSO separately from Analysis Services, this does not require an additional license. For more information, see SQL Server Books Online and your licensing information.
  6. Follow the instructions to complete the installation.

Method 2: Substitute the IP Address for the SQL Server Name

If the Setup program is having trouble connecting to the SQL server, substitute the IP address for the SQL server name.

To do this, on the Setup screen that is titled Microsoft Project Server 2002, Enter database server information, in the section that is titled Enter connection information for the existing database when choosing to connect to an existing database or when choosing to create a new database., type the IP address for the SQL server.
