You cannot log on to Outlook Web Access mailbox and a "the page cannot be displayed." error message occurs

This article was previously published under Q325097

SYMPTOMS

If you try to access your mailbox by using Microsoft Outlook Web Access (OWA), you may not be able to log on. Instead, you receive an error message that is similar to the following:
The page cannot be displayed.
Additionally, the following error message appears at the bottom of the page:
Cannot find server or DNS Error. Internet Explorer.
Note The actual message may vary, based on the Web browser that you use.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the Web site that houses the Exchange virtual directory on an Exchange 2000-based front-end server is set to any port other than port 80 for Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) traffic and any port other than port 443 for Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure (HTTPS) Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) traffic.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, either use port 80 for HTTP connections and port 443 for SSL connections to the front-end server or do not use a front-end server. A direct connection to the back-end mailbox server that is running OWA works on any free port.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server.

APPLIES TO
  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Standard Edition
  • Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Standard Edition
