You receive a "Not a Valid Win32 Application" error message when you start SharePoint Portal Server

SYMPTOMS

When you start Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server, you may receive one of the following error messages:
Could not start the SharePoint Portal Server service on Local Computer.
Error 193: %1 is not a valid Win32 application.
-or-
Could not start the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service on Local Computer.
Error 193: %1 is not a valid Win32 application.
-or-
Could not start the IIS Admin Service service on Local Computer.
Error 193: %1 is not a valid Win32 application.
-or-
Could not start the SharePoint Portal Server service on Local Computer.
Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start.
Additionally, the Event Viewer system log may contain event ID messages similar to the following event ID messages:
Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7000
Date: 1/1/2002
Time: 12:00:00 PM
User: N/A
Computer: MSBOB
Description:
The SharePoint Portal Server service failed to start due to the following error:
SharePoint Portal Server is not a valid Win32 application.
-or-
Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7000
Date: 1/1/2002
Time: 12:00:00 PM
User: N/A
Computer: MSBOB
Description:
The Microsoft Exchange Information Store service failed to start due to the following error:
Microsoft Exchange Information Store is not a valid Win32 application.

CAUSE

This issue occurs when one or both of the following conditions are true:
  • There is a file named Program in your SystemDrive folder.
  • There is a file named Common, SharePoint, or SharePoint Portal in your ProgramFiles folder.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, rename, move, or delete the respective files from the SystemDrive folder or the ProgramFiles folder.

MORE INFORMATION

When Windows Service Control Manager (Services.exe) tries to start the SharePoint Portal Server service or the Exchange Information Store service, the program verifies the following paths:
  • SystemDrive\Program
  • ProgramFiles\Common
  • ProgramFiles\SharePoint
  • ProgramFiles\SharePoint Portal
If these paths exist as files, the Service Control Manager cannot locate the following folders, and you receive the error messages and event ID messages that are listed in the "Symptoms" section of this article:
  • ProgramFiles
  • ProgramFiles\Common Files
  • ProgramFiles\SharePoint Portal Server

same problem in SMS 2003 !! first recive:" Error 193: %1 is not a valid Win32 application. " then try to fix the problem with: This problem may occur if the ImagePath Value Name for this service contains a space and the value is not encapsulated in quote marks. --- after fix this: the programm run....now --- but the main problem was: the directory in systemdrive called : PROGRAM searching 2 days and still dont realy know from where this folder commes

Watch out for files called "program"

I am facing the same problem for my service which runs on tomcat 6.0.exe. After goin through the above resolution I can locate the common files folder in my program files but what file I need to rename in the common files folder ? can any one tel me plz? thanks ani
