Embedded Objects on Web Pages in Internet Explorer Are Either Slow to Appear or Do Not Appear

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Internet Explorer, when you click a hyperlink to an object (such as an image or document) that is embedded in a Web page on your SharePoint Portal Server site, you may experience one or both of the following symptoms:
  • It may take a longer time than you expect (up to 45 seconds) for the page to appear in the browser window. When the Web page finally appears, the content for the embedded object is missing from the page.
  • The Web page in Internet Explorer stops responding (hangs) and the Web page does not appear in the browser window.

CAUSE

This behavior may occur if the following conditions are true:
  • The hyperlink to the embedded object does not use "http:/" in the Uniform Resource Locator (URL). For example, the hyperlink to the content that you want to access may use "file:/" in the URL.
  • The content that you want to access is located on a server that is external to the SharePoint Portal Server server farm.
  • The server (that hosts the content that you want to access) is unavailable.

RESOLUTION

To work around this behavior, access the content later when the server is available.

APPLIES TO
  • Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003
