Duplicate .msp files are created in the %Windir%\Installer folder when you install a patch or a minor update for Office 2000, for Office XP, or for Office 2003
After you install a patch or a minor upgrade for Microsoft Office 2000, for Microsoft Office XP, or for Microsoft Office 2003,
the %Windir%\Installer folder contains two installation (.msp) files. These files are
the same for each update that you have installed, contrary to
expectations.
This issue is caused by a Microsoft Windows installer problem that was fixed in Microsoft Windows Installer 3.0.
When you upgrade to Windows Installer 3.0, new duplicate files are prevented from being created. However, this upgrade does not remove the original duplicate file.
Windows Installer 3.0 is included in Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2). Windows Installer 3.0 is also available as a redistributable system component for the following products:
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 (SP3)
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 (SP4)
- Microsoft Windows XP
- Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1)
- Mixcrosoft Windows Server 2003

Community Feedback System
Very often, it takes hours to solve a problem. Very often, you've looked high
and low, and have tried a lot of solutions. When you finally found it, chances
are, it was because someone else helped you. Here's your chance to give back.
Use our community feedback tool to let others know what worked for you and what
didn't.
Please also understand that the community feedback system is not warranted to be
correct, it's simply a system that we've built to let people try and help each
other. If something in a feedback response doesn't make sense to you, or you're
not comfortable making changes that the feedback talks about (like registry
edits), please consult a professional.
Thank you for using kbAlertz.com Feedback System.
