Duplicate .msp files are created in the %Windir%\Installer folder when you install a patch or a minor update for Office 2000, for Office XP, or for Office 2003

SYMPTOMS

After you install a patch or a minor upgrade for Microsoft Office 2000, for Microsoft Office XP, or for Microsoft Office 2003, the %Windir%\Installer folder contains two installation (.msp) files. These files are the same for each update that you have installed, contrary to expectations.

CAUSE

This issue is caused by a Microsoft Windows installer problem that was fixed in Microsoft Windows Installer 3.0.

RESOLUTION

When you upgrade to Windows Installer 3.0, new duplicate files are prevented from being created. However, this upgrade does not remove the original duplicate file.
