Arabic emails when send using a UTF8 Client cannot be read in OWA 2000

SYMPTOMS

When you send an Arabic Email message from a UTF8 CodePage Client such as hotmail, the message is received with unrecognized characters in Exchange 2000 OWA and changing the encoding to Arabic (windows 1256) from the view menu/encoding does not help

CAUSE

The Internet Message Format Character Sets in the Global Settings in Exchange 2000 for MIME and non-MIME is set to Arabic (Windows 1256)

RESOLUTION

  1. Start Exchange System Manager. To do this, click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft Exchange, and then click System Manager.
  2. Double-click Global Settings, and then double-click Internet Message Formats. NOTE: The right pane displays a list of the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) policies that are currently defined. The domain column specifies the domains to which the policies apply
  3. Right-click the policy that you want to edit, and then click Properties
  4. Click Message Format
  5. Select Unicode (UTF-8) for your Exchange 2000 organization, and then click OK

APPLIES TO
  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Enterprise Server
  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Standard Edition

Community Feedback System

Very often, it takes hours to solve a problem. Very often, you've looked high and low, and have tried a lot of solutions. When you finally found it, chances are, it was because someone else helped you. Here's your chance to give back. Use our community feedback tool to let others know what worked for you and what didn't.

Please also understand that the community feedback system is not warranted to be correct, it's simply a system that we've built to let people try and help each other. If something in a feedback response doesn't make sense to you, or you're not comfortable making changes that the feedback talks about (like registry edits), please consult a professional.
