You receive a "The portal site being restored does not use shared services" error message when you try to restore the server that is running SharePoint Portal Server 2003
When you restore your server running Microsoft Office Share
Point Portal Server 2003 from backup, you may receive the following
message:
The portal site being restored does not use
shared services, but the server farm is configured for shared services. If you
restore the portal site on this server farm, the portal site will use shared
services. The original search configuration and results, alerts, user profiles,
and personal sites from this portal site will be replaced by those shared
services
This problem may occur if your Office Share Point Portal
Server was a non-Shared Services portal site when the back-up was created, and
it is now part of a Shared Services site.
To work around this problem, restore the non-Shared Services
backup to a separate computer, create the site on the new computer, and then
create a new backup of the Shared Services site. Use the new backup of the
Shared Services site to restore the Shared Services SharePoint Portal
Server.
Microsoft
has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed
at the beginning of this article.
In Office Share Point Portal Server, a
Shared Services site is a portal site that uses search and profile data services
that are shared from a master portal. A
non-Shared Services site has its own search program and profile data.

Very often, it takes hours to solve a problem. Very often, you've looked high
and low, and have tried a lot of solutions. When you finally found it, chances
are, it was because someone else helped you. Here's your chance to give back.
Use our community feedback tool to let others know what worked for you and what
didn't.
Please also understand that the community feedback system is not warranted to be
correct, it's simply a system that we've built to let people try and help each
other. If something in a feedback response doesn't make sense to you, or you're
not comfortable making changes that the feedback talks about (like registry
edits), please consult a professional.
