Presence icon does not appear when you browse an Internet-hosted SharePoint Portal Server Web site

SYMPTOMS

When you browse a Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Internet-hosted Web site, the Presence icon only appears if you rest on it.

CAUSE

The implementation of the Presence feature enables it to work on intranet sites out of the box. If the SharePoint Portal Server site is an Internet-hosted site, you must add the site to your Trusted Sites list in Microsoft Internet Explorer for the pawn to appear without having to rest on it.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, add the Internet Web site to your Trusted Sites list. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Start Internet Explorer.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
  3. On the Security tab, click Trusted Sites, and then click Sites.
  4. In the Add this Web site to the zone box, type the http address, and then click Add.

Note You may have to click to clear the Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone check box to add an http address.

APPLIES TO
  • Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003
  • Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 2.0
