On This Page

SUMMARY

Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 and Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 do not support Digest authentication or Advanced Digest authentication. You cannot use Digest authentication or Advanced Digest authentication in Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) 6.0 with Windows SharePoint Services 2.0-based Web sites.

Advanced Digest authentication is supported in IIS 6.0 with Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 and Office SharePoint Portal Server 2007 Web sites.

Digest authentication and Advanced Digest authentication in IIS 6.0

Digest authentication and Advanced Digest authentication are authentication methods that send user credentials over the network as an MD5 hash, where the original user name and password cannot be deciphered from the hash. The MD5 hash, also known as an MD5 message-digest, transmits a hash of the user's credentials in a Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) header in an HTTP 1.1-compliant browser such as Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 and later.

For more information about authentication methods in IIS 6.0, see the "Authentication" topic in the "Security" section of the Server Administration Guide of the IIS 6.0 documentation. To view the IIS 6.0 documentation, visit the following Microsoft Web sites:

Very often, it takes hours to solve a problem. Very often, you've looked high and low, and have tried a lot of solutions. When you finally found it, chances are, it was because someone else helped you. Here's your chance to give back. Use our community feedback tool to let others know what worked for you and what didn't.

Please also understand that the community feedback system is not warranted to be correct, it's simply a system that we've built to let people try and help each other. If something in a feedback response doesn't make sense to you, or you're not comfortable making changes that the feedback talks about (like registry edits), please consult a professional.
