You receive an SQL access error message when you change the configuration database administrator account in SharePoint Portal Server 2003
When you try to make changes to the configuration database administrator account on the
Configure Server Farm Account Settings page in Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003, you receive a SQL access error message.
This issue may occur when you do not have security administrator permissions and database creator permissions on the target SQL server.
You must have these permissions to grant the new account the same permissions and to give it the dbowner role for all SharePoint Portal Server databases on the target SQL server.
To resolve this issue, grant the account the appropriate permissions, and then retry the operation. To do so, follow these steps:
- Start SQL Enterprise Manager.
- In the left pane, open the Security folder.
- Right-click the Logins node, and then click New Login.
- Click the Server Roles tab, and then click to select the following check boxes:
- Database Creators
- Security Administrators
- Click OK.
APPLIES TO
- Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003

Very often, it takes hours to solve a problem. Very often, you've looked high
and low, and have tried a lot of solutions. When you finally found it, chances
are, it was because someone else helped you. Here's your chance to give back.
Use our community feedback tool to let others know what worked for you and what
didn't.
Please also understand that the community feedback system is not warranted to be
correct, it's simply a system that we've built to let people try and help each
other. If something in a feedback response doesn't make sense to you, or you're
not comfortable making changes that the feedback talks about (like registry
edits), please consult a professional.
