SUMMARY

This article discusses the database and virtual server settings that you must specify when you restore a portal by using SharePoint Portal Server Central Administration. When you restore a portal by using SharePoint Portal Server Central Administration, you must also specify the content database (or content databases) that Windows SharePoint Services uses. You must do this before you can access Windows SharePoint Services sites from the portal.

When you click Restore a portal on the Create Portal Site for ServerName page of SharePoint Portal Server Central Administration to restore a portal, you must specify the following information:

The name of the site database from where you want to restore the portal and the name of the database server that stores the site database.
The name of the user profile database from where you want to restore user profile information and the name of the database server that stores the user profile database.
The name of the services database from where you want to restore the portal and the name of the database server that stores the services database.
The virtual server for the new portal.
The URL that you use to connect to the new portal.

After you specify this information, click OK to start creating the new portal. Note that this option restores the portal site but does not restore the search configuration and content indexes. Information in the databases is restored, and the default search configuration for new portal sites is used.

Before Windows SharePoint Services sites are added to the portal, you must manually update the content database settings for the virtual server by using Windows SharePoint Services Central Administration. To do so, follow these steps:

Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click SharePoint Central Administration.
In the left pane, click Windows SharePoint Services.
On the Windows SharePoint Services Central Administration page, click Configure virtual server settings under Virtual Server Configuration.
On the Virtual Server List page, click the virtual server.
On the Virtual Server Settings page, click Manage content databases under Virtual Server Management.
On the Manage Content Databases page, click the name of the database under Content Databases.
On the Manage Content Database Settings page, specify the appropriate content database settings for the virtual server, and then click OK.
