Custom list templates do not appear on the "Create Page" page of a SharePoint site

SYMPTOMS

When you create a custom list template in a site and you add the list template to the template gallery of another site, you may find that the list template does not appear on the "Create Page" page of that site. As a result, you cannot use the custom template to create a new list on that list.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if you create the custom list template in a site that has a different site definition ID than the site that you added the template to. For example, this issue may occur if any one of the following conditions is true:
  • You create a list template in a Windows SharePoint Portal Services site, and then you import the list template to a portal site.
  • You create a list template in a portal site, and then you import the list template to a Windows SharePoint Portal Services site.
  • You create a list template in a Windows SharePoint Services site, and then you import the list template to another Windows SharePoint Services site that uses a different site definition ID.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, create the list template in the Windows SharePoint Services site or in the portal site where the list template will be used. For example, if Windows SharePoint Services sites that are based on the Team Site template require a survey template, create the survey template in a site that is based on the Team Site template.

MORE INFORMATION

When you create a list, you can select a list template from the set of list templates on the server and on the site collection. This set of list templates is filtered according to the site language and the site definition ID that your Windows SharePoint Services site is based on. For example, a site that is based on the Meeting Workspace template has a site definition ID that is different from a site that is based on the Team Site template. If you create a Meeting Announcements custom list template from the Announcements list in a site that is based on a Meeting Workspace template, the Meeting Announcements list template that you create is not available on a site that is based on the Team Site template.

For more information about working with templates in Windows SharePoint Services, see the "Working with Templates" topic in the "Managing Sites" section of the Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Administration Guide. The Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Administration Guide (Administrator's Help.chm) is located in the Docs folder in the root folder of the SharePoint Portal Server 2003 CD.

I agree: This is not a work-around at all. I too need the ability to export a list as a template and import it into other sites. My only work-around has been to export the list content to Excel and them import it in the other sites.

This article just explains the problem with no solution or valid work-around. If at all I need to create separate lists for each site template then whats the use of saving it as template (where i want to use the same list in mulitiple site with different tempaltes)

I agree with all of you. The "solution" to several SharePoint problems is echoed here. It's always something like, "Hey you know that thing you need to create from a template? Well to get what you want, you just need to create it where you need it, then save it as a template for future use." WHY THE HELL WOULD I NEED A TEMPLATE IF I COULD DO THAT?
