Description of the limitations in the lengths of the Setup paths for installing SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Beta 2 Tech Refresh

SUMMARY

This article contains information about the limitations in the lengths of the Setup path when you install SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Beta 2 Tech Refresh.

After you download SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Beta 2 Tech Refresh, you must extract the files that are contained in the SPS2003Beta2TR.exe package to a folder on your hard disk before you can run the Autorun.exe file or the Setup.exe file to install SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Beta 2 Tech Refresh. This article discusses the maximum number of characters that can be contained in the path of the folder where you extracted the SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Beta 2 Tech Refresh files to, and where you run either Autorun.exe or Setup.exe from.

MORE INFORMATION

The following lists the maximum number of characters that can be contained in the path of the Autorun.exe and Setup.exe files:
  • If you install SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Beta 2 Tech Refresh by using Autorun.exe, the maximum number of characters that can be contained in the path of the Autorun.exe file that is located in the root of the folder where you extracted the SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Beta2Tech Refresh files to is 100 characters. If the path of the Autorun.exe file is longer than 100 characters, copy the files to a folder that has a path that is less than 100 characters, and then run Autorun.exe from that folder.
  • If you install SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Beta 2 Tech Refresh by using Setup.exe, the maximum number of characters that can be contained in the path of the Setup.exe file that is located in the root of the folder where you extracted the SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Beta 2 Tech Refresh files to is 139 characters. If the path of the Setup.exe file is longer than 139 characters, copy the files to a folder that has a path that is less than 139 characters, and then run Setup.exe from that folder.
If the number of characters in the path of the Autorun.exe file is longer than 100 characters, or if the number of characters in the path of the Setup.exe file is longer than 139, you may receive an error message that is similar to one of the following when you install SharePoint Portal Server or SharePoint Portal Server optional components:
ERROR_INVALID_PRODUCT_PATH
Path to the Setup.exe file
-or-
Could Not Find Settings INI file
-or-
Could not read information for file [3]
-or-
Could not locate file, please insert the SharePoint Portal Server CD or point to the location
To resolve this issue, copy the files to a folder that has a path that is less than 100 characters or less than 139 characters (as appropriate), and then run either Autorun.exe or Setup.exe (as appropriate) from that folder.
