The Install with database engine option is not available when you try to install Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003
When you try to install Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003, the
install with database engine option may be unavailable. As a result, you cannot install the Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine (MSDE).
This behavior may occur if you install SharePoint Portal Server on a domain controller. Because of security features that are included with Windows Server 2003, you can only use the remote database option when you install SharePoint Portal Server on a domain controller.
To work around this behavior, use one of the following methods.
Method 1: Install SharePoint Portal Server on a Member Server
When you install SharePoint Portal Server on a Windows Server 2003 member server, you can click to select the option to install the Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine (MSDE).
Note You must use the version of MSDE that SharePoint Portal Server installs.
Method 2: Install SQL Server 2000 SP3
Install Microsoft SQL Server 2000 together with the latest service pack on the domain controller. You can use SQL Server 2000 SP3 or later for your SharePoint Portal Server database.
For more information about how to deploy, configure, and manage SharePoint Portal Server, see the
Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Administration Guide. The
Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Administration Guide (Administrator's Help.chm) is located in the Docs folder in the root folder of the SharePoint Portal Server 2003 CD. For more information about SharePoint Portal Server, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

Community Feedback System
Very often, it takes hours to solve a problem. Very often, you've looked high
and low, and have tried a lot of solutions. When you finally found it, chances
are, it was because someone else helped you. Here's your chance to give back.
Use our community feedback tool to let others know what worked for you and what
didn't.
Please also understand that the community feedback system is not warranted to be
correct, it's simply a system that we've built to let people try and help each
other. If something in a feedback response doesn't make sense to you, or you're
not comfortable making changes that the feedback talks about (like registry
edits), please consult a professional.
Thank you for using kbAlertz.com Feedback System.
