"The gatherer index was not initialized" error messages are logged by the SharePointPS Search Service to the application event log

SYMPTOMS

On a server that is running SharePoint Portal Server 2003, event error messages with a description that is similar to the following may be logged by the Microsoft SharePointPS Search service to the application event log:
The gatherer index was not initialized. The content index must be remounted. If the index is still not initialized, remove it.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if one or more of the following conditions are true:
  • Incorrect user account information is configured for the configuration database administration account in the Configure Server Farm Account Settings page of SharePoint Central Administration.
  • Incorrect user account information is configured for the default content access account in the Configure Server Farm Account Settings page of SharePoint Central Administration.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, make sure that the user account information that you specify for the configuration database administration account and the default content access account is correct. To verify the configuration database administration account and default content access account settings, follow these steps:
  1. Start SharePoint Central Administration.
  2. Under Server Configuration, click Configure Server Farm Account Settings.
  3. On the Configure Server Farm Account Settings page, in the Configuration Database Administration Account area, verify that the user account information that you configured as the configuration database administration account is correct.
  4. In the Default Content Access Account area, verify that the user account information that you configured as the default content access account is correct.
  5. Click OK.

This article can also fix the index error when using the SharePoint Portal Server backup utility "ERROR: The server threw and exception". The useless help (MVP's) in microsoft's newsgroups never repled to the above error postings with anything of use. I have found this question left open, many times, over a year old.
