You receive an "HTTP 404" error message when you click a link to a document that is stored in a backward-compatible document library in SharePoint Portal Server 2003
When you click a link to documents that are stored in a
backward-compatible document library in Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal
Server 2003, you may receive an error message that is similar to the following:
As a result, you cannot access any
documents that are stored in a backward-compatible document library in
SharePoint Portal Server 2003.
This problem may occur in situations when you upgrade from
Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server 2001 to a SharePoint Portal Server 2003
deployment that uses a document management server with a different URL than the
one that is used for SharePoint Portal Server 2001, and then back up and
restore the data to a server farm deployment of SharePoint Portal Server 2003.
In this situation, links to documents in backward-compatible document libraries
still refer to the server that was running SharePoint Portal Server
2001.
For example, this problem may occur if the following conditions
are true, in the order that they appear:
- You upgrade to SharePoint Portal Server 2003 from
SharePoint Portal Server 2001 by doing the following, in the order that they
appear:
- You back up and restore SharePoint Portal Server 2001
data to another computer that is running SharePoint Portal Server 2001.
- You use the Upgrade.exe tool to export data from the
SharePoint Portal Server 2001computer.
- You install Microsoft Windows Server 2003 on the
computer, and then use the Upgrade.exe tool to upgrade the SharePoint Portal
Server 2001 computer to SharePoint Portal Server 2003.
- You import SharePoint Portal Server 2001 data to the
SharePoint Portal Server 2003 computer.
- You backup the SharePoint Portal Server 2003 data on the
computer, and then restore the data to a server farm deployment of SharePoint
Portal Server 2003.
To work around this problem, rename the SharePoint Portal
Server 2003 computer before you import SharePoint Portal Server 2001 data to
it.
Microsoft
has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed
at the beginning of this article.
For more information about how to upgrade to SharePoint
Portal Server 2003 from SharePoint Portal Server 2001, see the "Upgrading from
Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server 200" topic in the "Upgrading" section of the
"Administration" chapter of the
Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Administrator's Guide. The
Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Administrator's Guide (Administrator's Help.chm) is located in the Docs folder in the
root of the SharePoint Portal Server 2003 CD.
