"The feature that you are trying to use is not supported in your Web browser" error message when you try to view the Site Settings page of your portal site

SYMPTOMS

When you click Site Settings to connect to the Site Settings page of your portal site in Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003, you receive the following error message:
The feature that you are trying to use is not supported in your Web browser. You must install Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5.0 or higher before using this feature.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs if you use a Web browser other than Microsoft Internet Explorer, such as Netscape Navigator 7.1 or Mozilla 1.4. The Site Settings page contains certain dynamic HTML (DHTML) components that are only supported in Internet Explorer 5.0 or later. To view the Site Settings page of a portal site in SharePoint Portal Server 2003, you have to use Internet Explorer 5.0 or later.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, use Internet Explorer 5.0 or later to connect to the Site Settings page of your portal site.
