You may experience one or more of the following symptoms on
a computer that is running Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003:
- The computer frequently runs out of disk space.
- Internet mail flow stops.
- Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS)-hosted sites
stop working, and that includes the http://companyweb site and the Microsoft
Outlook Web Access (OWA) site.
- The information store mailboxes are dismounted after the
reserve log files are filled.
Note The reserve log files (Res1.log and Res2.log) are Jet database
format files that are used by the Windows Internet Name Service (WINS). These
log files function as emergency placeholders if the system runs out of disk
space. If there is not enough disk space to create a transaction log file, the
server flushes any outstanding transactions into these log files. The WINS
service then shuts down and logs an event to Event Viewer. - Incoming faxes stop working.
- Users cannot save files to network shares.
- Report generation fails.
- Various snap-ins do not open.
This problem may occur if a computer that is running Windows
Small Business Server 2003 does not have much disk space available. The
low-disk-space scenario may occur if you enable the Remove E-Mail Attachments
option when you run the Configure E-mail and Internet Connection Wizard, and
many attachments are subsequently removed from e-mail.
Note When you run the Configure E-mail and Internet Connection Wizard,
you can specify that the e-mail attachments that you receive from the Internet
are removed. You can also specify a folder where the removed e-mail attachments
are then saved.
To specify a folder for removed e-mail attachments,
follow these steps:
- Run the Configure E-mail and Internet Connection
Wizard.
- In the Remove E-Mail Attachments dialog
box, click to select the Save removed e-mail attachments in a
folder check box.
- Type the path of the folder in the Folder
Location box.
To resolve this problem, you must address the low-disk-space
problem. Verify that the folder that contains the removed e-mail attachments
does not use too much disk space. (When you run the Configure E-mail and
Internet Connection Wizard, you can specify a folder where removed e-mail
attachments will be saved. When you designate a folder, all removed e-mail
attachments will be saved to the folder. If no folder is designated, the
blocked e-mail attachments are removed and discarded without being
saved).
To determine the folder size, right-click the folder in
Windows Explorer, and then click
Properties. If the
low-disk-space problem is caused by too many attachments in this folder, remove
the attachment files to restore the disk space, and then investigate the source
of the attachment files.
To prevent this problem, you can use disk
quotas to limit the disk space that is allocated to the folder that contains
removed e-mail attachments.
