Some Client Computers Do Not Run an Advertised Program After You Re-enable Its Dependent Program

SYMPTOMS

In the following Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003 scenario, some client computers process the request to run the program, while other client computers do not:
  1. You advertise a program that is dependent on another program.
  2. You disable the dependant program.
  3. You re-enable the dependant program.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when the both of the following conditions exist:
  • You have SMS Advanced Client installed on some client computers and SMS 2003 Legacy Client installed on other client computers.
  • The package trigger condition has passed.
In Systems Management Server 2003, client computers that are running SMS Advanced Client can successfully run a program that processes a request to run a re-enabled dependent program after the trigger condition has passed. However, client computers that are running SMS 2003 Legacy Client cannot.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

The following example illustrates the behavior that occurs with each type of client in the scenario that is described in the "Symptoms" section of this article:
  1. You advertise program A. It depends on the execution of program B.
  2. You advertise program B.
  3. You disable program B until the schedule where the client computers can process the request to run program A has passed.
  4. You re-enable program B.
In this scenario, you experience the following behaviors:
  • On client computers that are running SMS Advanced Client, program B runs, and then program A runs.
  • On client computers that are running SMS 2003 Legacy Client, neither of the advertised programs run.

APPLIES TO
  • Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003
