"Server Error in '/' Application" error message when you try to run reports in Microsoft CRM

SYMPTOMS

When you try to run reports on a Microsoft Business Solutions CRM server that has a lot of records in the database, when the report that you are running retrieves a lot of records, you may receive the following error message:
Server Error in '/' Application.

Request timed out.

Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.

Exception Details: System.Web.HttpException: Request timed out.

Source Error: An unhandled exception was generated during the execution of the current web request. Information regarding the origin and location of the exception can be identified using the exception stack trace below.

Stack Trace: [HttpException (0x80004005): Request timed out.]
This problem may occur even though you have already installed the 829886 software update.

RESOLUTION

If you continue to receive the "Server Error in '/' Application" error message after you install the update that is described in Microsoft Knowledge Base article 829886, install the Microsoft CRM 1.0 reports software update 829888 (a set of rewritten reports) that is described in this article.

Prerequisites

To install this update, you must have Microsoft CRM version 1.0.

Installation Information

Install this update on the computer that runs the Microsoft CRM server. Make sure that the Microsoft CRM Deployment Manager is closed before you install this update. If you want, Microsoft CRM Support can help you to republish the updated reports into your Microsoft CRM installation. This update supports the following Setup switches:
  • /? : Display the list of installation switches.
  • /u : Use Unattended mode.
  • /f : Force other programs to quit when the computer shuts down.
  • /z : Do not restart when the installation is complete.
  • /q : Use Quiet mode (no user interaction).
  • /x : Extract the files without running Setup.
For example, to install the update without any user intervention, use the following command line:
CRM1.0-KB829888-Server-Windows2000.exe /u /q
To verify that the update is installed on your computer, confirm that the following registry key exists:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Updates\Microsoft CRM\1.0\Server\SP0\KB829888

Removal Information

You cannot remove this update.

Restart Requirement

You do not have to restart your Microsoft CRM server after you install this update.
