You cannot import categories from SharePoint Portal Server 2001 to SharePoint Portal Server 2003

SYMPTOMS

When you upgrade your server to Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 and import categories from the earlier Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server 2001 site, you receive an error message during import, and import for that category fails. You also cannot import or access any data from that Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server 2001 category.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if the category names from the earlier SharePoint site are more than 100 characters in length.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, rename the category so that the character length is 100 or less characters, and then try to run upgrade again.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section of this article.
