BUG: Setup Manager Does Not Recognize Small Business Server 2003 as a Valid Product

SYMPTOMS

When you run the Setup Manager wizard in Corporate Mode, the Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003 product is not in the list of available products in the wizard. Although the Product page of the wizard lists other Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 products, the list does not include a Small Business Server product. If you select another product (such as Windows XP Professional), and if you select any option other than Setup From a CD on the Distribution Share page, you receive the following error message:
Setup Manager. The CD in the drive is not a Windows Setup CD. Please insert a Windows Setup CD, and then click Next.


Note To run Setup Manager in Corporate Mode, extract the contents of the Deploy.cab file that is located in the \Support\Tools folder of the Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003 product CD to a folder, and then run the Setupmgr.exe program.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because Small Business Server 2003 is not included in the hard-coded list of supported products in Setup Manager.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, create an Unattend.txt file with settings that will permit setup to be run automatically. After you create this file, the Setup Manager wizard will complete successfully.

To create the Unattend.txt file, follow these steps:
  1. Start Setup Manager: double-click the Setupmgr.exe icon in the folder where the contents of Deploy.cab was extracted.
  2. On the New or Existing page of the Setup Manager wizard, click the Create new option, and then click Next.
  3. On the Type Of Setup page, click the Unattended setup option, and then click Next.
  4. On the Product page, select any one of the Server products that is listed (which one you select is not important), and then click Next.
  5. On the User Interaction page, select the level of user interaction that you want, and then click Next.
  6. On the Distribution Share page, click Setup From a CD, and then click Next.
  7. Continue through the wizard, and select the options that you want.
  8. In the dialog box that appears after the last page of the wizard (Additional commands), save the Unattend.txt file where you want, and then click OK.
  9. Exit Setup Manager.
  10. In Windows Explorer, create a folder on the computer that will host the distribution share of Small Business Server 2003.
  11. Copy the i386 folder from the Small Business Server 2003 operating system CD to the folder that you created in step 10.
  12. Share the folder that you created in step 10.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section of this article.

Steps to Reproduce the Behavior

  1. Start Setup Manager.
  2. Try to create an Unattend.txt file that uses a distribution share.
  3. On the Distribution Share page of the wizard, do not click Setup From a CD.

    You receive the error message that is listed in the "Symptoms" section.
