"No longer able to access this book" error message when you try to open an e-book in Microsoft Reader for the Pocket PC

SYMPTOMS

When you start Microsoft Reader for the Pocket PC and then try to open an eBook, you may receive the following error message:
Microsoft reader is no longer able to access the book.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if any one of the following conditions is true:
  • You activated the current version of Microsoft Reader for the Pocket PC by using a different Microsoft Passport Network account than you used to activate the earlier version of Reader for the Pocket PC.
  • You use an earlier version of Reader for the Pocket PC that does not support Owner Exclusive eBook content.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, use the following methods in the order that they appear.

Method 1: Check the current Passport Network registration

You must activate the Reader for the Pocket PC upgrade with the same Passport Network account that you used to activate the earlier version. To determine the current Passport Network account that you are using, follow these steps:
  1. Tap Start, tap Programs, and then tap Microsoft Reader.
  2. On the Library page, tap Settings.
  3. On Page 3, note the Passport Network account identity under Activated for.

Method 2: Upgrade Reader for the Pocket PC

To upgrade Reader for the Pocket PC, follow these steps:
  1. Tap Start, and then tap Settings.
  2. On the System tab, tap Remove Programs.
  3. Tap Microsoft Reader, and then tap Remove to remove Microsoft Reader.
  4. Download the latest version of Reader for the Pocket PC.

    To do this, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
    http://www.microsoft.com/reader/downloads/ppc.mspx (http://www.microsoft.com/reader/downloads/ppc.mspx)
  5. Under Full Installation, select the version of Microsoft Reader for the Pocket PC that you want to install, click Open, and then follow the instructions that appear on the screen to install Reader for the Pocket PC.

MORE INFORMATION

Some Microsoft Pocket PC manufacturers include a version of Reader for the Pocket PC in the device read-only memory (ROM). Programs that are installed in ROM do not appear in the Remove Programs list on the Pocket PC and cannot be removed. To upgrade Reader for the Pocket PC, follow the steps in the "Resolution" section of this article to install a later version of Reader for the Pocket PC into the random-access memory (RAM) on your device.
