A folder is no longer displayed in a document library after you rename the folder on your Windows SharePoint Services Web site

SYMPTOMS

When you rename a folder in a document library on your Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services or on your Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Web site, you may find that the folder is no longer listed in the document library. However, if you type the URL of the folder in the Address bar of your Web browser, you can access the folder and you can view its contents.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the name of the folder contains one or more "" characters (without the quotation marks). For example, this issue may occur if both of the following conditions are true, in the order that they are presented:
  • You create a new folder in a document library. For example, you create a folder that is named MyFolderA.
  • You rename the folder by using a name that includes one or more "" characters (without the quotation marks). For example, you rename the MyFolderA folder to MyFolderA/Docs.
In this situation, the name of the folder is changed to contain the name of a parent folder and the name of a child folder that is separated by a "" character (without the quotation mark). Neither folder is listed when you view the document library because the child folder is orphaned. That is, the parent folder does not exist.

For example, if you rename MyFolderA to MyFolderA/Docs, the MyFolderA folder is the parent folder and the Docs folder is the child folder. Neither the MyFolderA folder nor the Docs folder is displayed in the document library because the parent folder, MyFolderA, does not exist.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, add the missing parent folder to the document library. In the example that is described in the "Cause" section in this article, create a new folder in the document library that is named MyFolderA. After you do so, the parent folder that contains the child folder is listed in the document library. To view the contents of a folder, click the folder in the document library.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section of this article.
