You are unexpectedly prompted to enter your user credentials when you try to open an Office document in the workspace

SYMPTOMS

When you try to open an Office document that is stored in a document library in your Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server 2001 workspace, you may be unexpectedly prompted to enter your user name and password. This problem occurs when you try to open the document by using Web Folders or by clicking Open on the File menu in a Microsoft Office program. If you click Cancel in the dialog box that prompts you to enter your user name and password, the Office document opens.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when the following conditions are true:
  • The Office document is stored in a standard folder in the workspace.
  • Your user account is assigned to the Reader role for the standard folder where the Office document is stored.
In this situation, you are prompted to enter your user name and password when you try to open an Office document

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, do one of the following, as appropriate to your situation:
  • Use enhanced folders in the workspace. For more information about how to configure enhanced folders, see the "Managing Documents in Enhanced Folders" topic in the "Managing Documents" section of Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server User's Help (UsersHelp.chm).
  • Create a folder on a server, copy the Office documents to that folder, assign the appropriate share permissions to the folder, and then add the file share as a content source in SharePoint Portal Server 2001. For more information about how to add a content source, see the "Add and Manage Content Sources" topic in the "Managing the Workspace" section of Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server User's Help (UsersHelp.chm).

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section of this article.
