The use of special characters, extended characters, and other characters in Microsoft CRM 1.2
This article discusses the use of special characters, extended characters, and other foreign language characters in Microsoft Business Solutions CRM 1.2 and its components.
The following special characters, extended characters, and other foreign language characters are included with Microsoft CRM 1.2 and its components:
- Special characters available on the keyboard by pressing the <Shift> + <number> keys, such as ! @ # $ % ^ & * ( ).
- Special characters, including - [ ] { }/ \ | ` ~ < > ' " ; : ? , (comma) . (period) and "space."
- Some language specific characters.
- Non-printing ASCII characters between decimal number 00 and 31.
- Extended characters between decimal number 128 and 255 of the ASCII character chart.
- Unicode or double-byte characters.
The following table describes how to use various characters on specific Microsoft CRM components.

| Microsoft CRM Component | Comments |
|---|
| The name of the Microsoft CRM Server computer | Some DNS servers cannot recognize server names that use characters between decimal number 128 and 255 of the ASCII character chart. Do not use any one of the special characters. |
| The folder name or path of the folder where Microsoft CRM components are installed, including Microsoft CRM Exchange E-mail Router (the Router) and Microsoft CRM Sales for Outlook (the Outlook client). | Special Characters / \ | : * ? ' " < > ; - . (period) and "space". Do not use Unicode and double-byte characters. |
| The folder name of the Microsoft CRM Web site. | Special Characters / \ | : * ? ' " < > ; - . (period) and "space". Do not use Unicode and double-byte characters. |
| The name of the Microsoft CRM Web site. | Special Characters / \ | : * ? ' " < > ; - . (period) and "space". Do not use Unicode and double-byte characters. |
| Organization name | You can use all valid characters that Active Directory directory service accepts except &. |
| Business unit name | You can use all valid characters that Active Directory accepts except &. |
| User name | You can use all valid characters that Active Directory accepts except &. |
| Microsoft CRM Data | You can use all special and extended characters in the data that is stored in Microsoft CRM databases except Carriage Return (ASCII decimal 13) and Line Feed (ASCII decimal 10). |
| Microsoft CRM Data Migration Framework | You can use all the special and extended characters except carriage return (ASCII decimal 13) and line feed (ASCII decimal 10) in the data that is migrated into Microsoft CRM from the common data format (CDF) database . (The CDF database is a temporary staging database for data migration.) |
| Microsoft CRM Integration for Great Plains | Use only the standard ASCII characters and certain extended characters. Specific extended characters that you can use include ASCII decimal 128 through 175, 225, 241, 248, and 253.
If you use any characters that are not in this list (such as ASCII decimal 258, 259, and 269) in Microsoft CRM for an account name or a contact last name, when the data is synchronized from Microsoft Great Plains back to Microsoft CRM, the record appears as a new record instead of as an update. This problem occurs because Microsoft Great Plains does not recognize the characters. It will convert the unrecognized characters to values that it can recognize. As a result, the integration linking system creates a new record. |
