CAUSE

One of the following conditions may cause this problem to occur:
  • Graphic routines in an Office 2003 program compete with other programs for use of direct access to the display buffer.
  • The computer is heavily loaded, and the Display Control Interface (DCI) times out.
  • The DCI lock is changed without notifying the Microsoft Office 2003 program.
  • The Display modes have been changed in Microsoft Windows.
  • A DirectX full-screen activation (possibly when a program is running in a window) occurs.
  • A window repositioning occurs.
The probability of experiencing this problem goes up when you use other programs that use DCI or DirectX, or both, thereby competing with GDI+ for use of direct access to the display buffer.

Examples of such programs include some video teleconferencing programs, including Microsoft NetMeeting, OpenGL-based programs, and games.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, do not run graphic-intensive programs while you are running your Office 2003 program, or turn the graphics hardware acceleration off on your computer.

To turn graphics hardware acceleration off, use the method that is appropriate for your Microsoft Windows operating system.

Method 1: Use for Microsoft Windows XP

  1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Click Appearance and Themes.
  3. Click Display.
  4. On the Settings tab, click Advanced.
  5. On the Troubleshoot tab, move the Hardware acceleration slider control to the third position (from the left), and then click OK.

Note The following message is the description for this position:
Disable all DirectDraw and Direct3D accelerations, as well as all cursor and advanced drawing accelerations. Use this setting to correct severe problems with DirectX accelerated applications.
  6. Click OK to close the Display Properties dialog box.

Method 2: Use for Microsoft Windows 2000

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Display.
  3. On the Settings tab, click Advanced.

  5. Click OK to close the Display Properties dialog box.

Unfortunately the info above doesn'seem to offer me any help. I have windowsxp, w/update, and semantics firewall. I get that error every time I try to run any msoffice product. However, If I disable both the semantics and xp internal firewall (does it if running both or one or the other), then all is well and I have no problems. I had the same problem until I got rid of MSWORD as my email editor. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I have MS Word 2003 and every time I close it, it give the following error: Microsoft Office Word has encountered a problem when closing. Also, I noticed that I can not resize the inserted picture using the mouse. I tried to follow the instruction above but it did not solve the problem. I do suspect a conflict of picture routine between MS Word/Windows and nVidia driver. I do have Norton Internet Security 2006 installed. Any idea?

I face same situation last year and due to this my important .doc files went corrupted. I searched a lot on internet and found many software for word repair. Then my friend suggests me to try Stellar Phoenix Word Recovery Software, I used its demo version first to check whether my word files are recoverable or not. After using it I was able to view my word file, I was satisfied and opt for full version and saved my file.
