An out-of-date antivirus program may cause errors when you try to open an Office document or to start Outlook

On This Page

SUMMARY

This article describes an error message that you receive in Microsoft Office that states that an antivirus program is preventing you from opening a file. You may receive this error message for the following reasons:
  • There is a compatibility problem between your antivirus program and Office.
  • The file that you are trying to open is infected with a virus that your antivirus program was unable to remove.
  • The file that you are trying to open has been damaged.
To resolve the first two problems, you have to update your antivirus program. To resolve the third problem, you have to try to recover the file. This article will show you how to do this.

SYMPTOMS

When you try to open a Microsoft Office file, you may receive the following error message:
Your Anti-Virus software has blocked the file you were trying to open.

You should ensure your Anti-Virus software is fully up to date and try opening the file again. It is important to note that the blocked file may also contain a virus which your Anti-Virus software has not been able to remove. In this case you should treat the file with caution.

Note An antivirus program helps protect your computer from viruses. To avoid viruses, you should never download or open files from sources that you do not trust, visit Web sites that you do not trust, or open e-mail attachments when your antivirus program is disabled.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when your antivirus software and its signature files are out of date, when the file that you are trying to open is infected with a virus, or when the file has been damaged.

RESOLUTION

The resolution to this problem depends on whether your antivirus software and its signature file are out of date, whether your file is infected with a virus, or whether your file has been damaged.

To check whether your antivirus software and its signature file are out of date

To keep up with new viruses that are created, antivirus program vendors periodically provide an updated virus signature file that you can download from the Internet.

If you are experiencing this problem on a computer on which you have recently installed a new version of antivirus software from a CD, we recommend that you connect to the Internet as soon as possible to download the latest updates that are available from your antivirus software vendor.

To check whether your file is infected with a virus

If you are experiencing this problem on a computer that has the latest version of your antivirus software, that has up-to-date signature files, and on which you can open all files except this one, it is likely that the file is infected with a virus.

If your file is infected with a virus you should delete the file from your system. As soon as the file is deleted you can re-create the file or restore if from a back-up if you have one.

If the file is damaged

If the file is damaged, the file cannot be handled correctly by either the antivirus software or by the affected Office program. Therefore, to be able to use the file again, you have to try to recover the file. For instructions about how to do this, please see the articles that are listed for the Office program that you were using when this problem occurred.

Note Not all programs have file recovery or file repair capabilities.

I found this error message when upgrading from Office 2000 to Office 2003 when I went to open an Excel document. It only happened on 2 of several machines. I called Symantec (we are using Corporate AV 8.1) support and was told to try unregestering the OFFICEAV.DLL file found in the original installation folder of a prior installed version of NAV. I was instructed to use the following, from the run cmd line... "regsvr32 -u <path>\officeav.dll". Unfortunately this did not work for me. I suggest that you try uninstalling any prior versions from the add/remove utility. Failing that, I renamed the officeav.dll file and then exorcised all occurrances in the registry that I found, and rebooted. When I tried accessing my workbook file again.. all was well !! Good Luck to You !!

THANK YOU!!! Deleting all registry keys with "officeav.dll" RESOLVED THE PROBLEM! looks like Norton likes to hang out in the reg even after you uninstall it.... --- I have searched high and low and nobody could help me... I had Norton AV, and it was completely up to date with latest engine / defs and this problem persisted. I then completely uninstalled Norton AV, restarted, and was STILL getting the same error -- first, when I open Word I was getting an error about PDFMaker.dot, and then "The file cannot be opened because your virus scanner has detected a problem with the file." and then after that when I closed a doc it would say "you made changes to template normal.dot" and I'd say "NO" to that then get "the global template normal.dot has been changed" and cancel that and it would FINALLY let me out of the program --- deleting all registry values containing "officeav.dll" resolved all of these issues!! THANKS AGAIN!!!

Just loaded Office 2007 and kept getting the error 835404. I followed the directions above and deleted all officeav.dll from the registry (XP) and everything opens with no problem! Go to Start - Run then type regedit - after Registry Editor Opens go to Edit - Find, then type in: officeav.dll Registry will find the file, double click on the file under name (right side) and you will see a string with officeeav.dll in it. Just Right Click and delete. Your not done, there are more files, press F3 which will move you to the next file that needs to be deleted. Delete all files, reboot, and it should work. FYI, I made a restore point in XP before I deleted officeeav.dll. Thats easy too. Go to Start - All Programs -- Accessories -- system tools -- Restore System -- then click on Create a restore point and go from there.
