Upgrading from Microsoft CRM version 1.0 to version 1.2 fails

SYMPTOMS

You may not be able to upgrade from Microsoft CRM 1.0 to Microsoft CRM 1.2.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because your organization name contains a comma, a backslash (\), or both. In Microsoft CRM 1.0, organization names cannot contain a comma unless a backslash (\) appears immediately before it. For example, you can use the following organization name in Microsoft CRM 1.0:
OrganizationName\, Inc.
However, you cannot use either of these characters in organization names in Microsoft CRM v1.2.

For additional information about the use of special characters in Microsoft CRM version 1.2, see the Knowledge Base article at the following Microsoft Web site:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;[LN];833728 (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;%5Bln%5D;833728)

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, you must change the organization name in the Microsoft SQL Server databases and in the Microsoft Active Directory directory service, and then upgrade to Microsoft CRM 1.2. The new name must contain only acceptable characters. For this solution, you remove the backslash and the comma characters from the organization.

Note This article uses the fictitous name "Fabrikam" as the example. Therefore, the organization name changes from Fabrikam\, Inc. to Fabrikam Inc.

If you are upgrading to Microsoft CRM 1.2, you must use the procedures that are described in chapter 20, "Upgrade Microsoft CRM to Version 1.2" in the Microsoft Business Solutions CRM Implementation Guide.

This resolution is very complex. Therefore, Microsoft recommends that you contact Microsoft Product Support Services. For a complete list of Microsoft Product Support Services phone numbers and information about support costs, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
support.microsoft.com (http://support.microsoft.com/)
