"Microsoft Project cannot log you on automatically using your Windows user account" error message when you log on to Project Server 2002

SYMPTOMS

When you try to log on to Microsoft Project Server 2002 by using Microsoft Project Professional 2002, you may receive the following error message:
Microsoft Project cannot log you on automatically using your Windows user account. You need to change the account in your profile, or contact your Microsoft Project Server administrator to check if your Windows user account exists and is a valid account on the Microsoft Project Server. (5003)
This issue may occur if you try to log on to Project Server 2002 from a computer that is located in a workgroup or from a computer that is located in a non-trusted domain.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if the ProjectServer virtual directory in Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) is configured to use Anonymous access and is not configured to use Integrated Windows authentication.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, configure the ProjectServer virtual directory in IIS to use Integrated Windows authentication instead of Anonymous access. To do so, follow these steps:
  1. Start Internet Services Manager.
  2. Expand ServerName, and then expand the Web site that you want to configure--for example, expand Default Web Site.
  3. Right-click the ProjectServer virtual directory, and then click Properties.
  4. Click the Directory Security tab, and then click Edit under Anonymous access and authentication control.
  5. In the Authentication Methods dialog box, click to clear the Anonymous access check box, click to select the Integrated Windows authentication check box, and then click OK.
  6. Click OK, and then quit Internet Services Manager.
  7. Restart IIS. To do so, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, and then click Run.
    2. In the Open box, type cmd, and then click OK.
    3. At the command prompt, type iisreset, and then press ENTER.
    4. Type exit, and then press ENTER to quit Command Prompt.
