Usage analysis processing applies only to Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 Web sites

INTRODUCTION

This article discusses the "Configuring Site Usage Analysis" topic in the Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Administrator's Guide and explains that usage analysis processing applies only to Web sites that are based on Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 2.0.

MORE INFORMATION

The "Configuring Site Usage Analysis" topic in the Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Administrator's Guide applies only to Web sites that are based on Windows SharePoint Services 2.0. When you configure usage analysis processing on a server, the usage analysis data is collected for Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 Web sites. No usage analysis data is collected for portal sites in Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003.

Usage analysis permits you to track how Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 Web sites on your server are used. You can track how many users visit your site, the type and number of hits your site receives, and other site-usage information. You configure usage analysis processing for Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 on the Configure Usage Analysis Processing page of Windows SharePoint Services Central Administration. Log files are created daily to track usage information.

For more information about how to configure usage analysis processing, see the "Configuring Site Usage Analysis" topic in the Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Administrator's Guide. The Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Administrator's Guide (Administrator's Help.chm) is located in the Docs folder in the root of the SharePoint Portal Server 2003 CD.

Community Feedback System

Very often, it takes hours to solve a problem. Very often, you've looked high and low, and have tried a lot of solutions. When you finally found it, chances are, it was because someone else helped you. Here's your chance to give back. Use our community feedback tool to let others know what worked for you and what didn't.

Please also understand that the community feedback system is not warranted to be correct, it's simply a system that we've built to let people try and help each other. If something in a feedback response doesn't make sense to you, or you're not comfortable making changes that the feedback talks about (like registry edits), please consult a professional.

Why wouldn't Microsoft have usage analysis information for portal sites? How do you find out if your portal sites are being used, etc.?

I find this article to be miss leading considering when you use FrontPage 2003 and Usage is turned on it can report on Areas. Areas are on the Portal side that house WSS Functionality. What we have done in our environment is turned on usage and are using the Web Components to display the Top 10 statistics for each Area (Portal) and Site (WSS).
