"The memory could not be written" error message when you start Publisher 2002

SYMPTOMS

When you start Microsoft Publisher 2002, you may receive the following error message:
The instruction at "0x77f536f7" referenced memory at "0x00000000." The memory could not be written.
When you are editing a previously saved file in Publisher 2002, you may receive the following error message:
The instruction at "0x77f2ca6" referenced memory at "0xfffffff8." The memory could not be read.
In both situations, Publisher 2002 will quit.

Note The memory address may vary.

CAUSE

This problem may be caused by your default printer name.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, remove and reinstall your printer. To do this, follow these steps.

Note Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.
  1. Click Start, and then click Printers and Faxes.
  2. In the Printers and Faxes dialog box, right-click your default printer, and then click Delete.
  3. In the Printers dialog box, click Yes when you receive the following message:
Are you sure you want to delete the printer 'your printer'?
  4. In the Printers dialog box, click OK when you receive the following message:
Warning: The default printer has been deleted. The new default printer is 'your new printer'.
  5. In the Printers and Faxes dialog box, click the File menu, and then click Add Printer.
  6. Follow the directions in the Add Printer Wizard.
  7. After the Add Printer Wizard has completed, check your printer to make sure that it is the default printer.

Note The default printer will have a small check mark. If your printer is not the default printer, right-click your printer, and then click Set as default printer.

Well I have seen hundreds of posts now for the same problem which only seemed to really take hold of the PC comunity at the later part of 2004. To me any way,,,,,this would have to mean that if it is not a virus (which every one says it isnt)there has to be a problem with a Service pack or a driver that has been updated after June 2004. Also because there are so many PC's that have been affected by this error now it could possibly mean that it is either a VIA or a nVidia or a Microsoft update that has a problem. I have been using XP pro now since 2001 and this (The Memory Could Not Be Read)problem only started for me after I installed SP2 and updated Net Framework and the other drivers listed above in August Sept 2004. I now have a sneaky suspission that because Microsoft are so tight lipped about the problem and refuse to admit that the problem even exists in XP that there is a 99.9%probability that it is a memory conflict in their software updates somewhere. I am going to remove as many updates & drivers as I can that I have installed since June 2004 to see if I can pinpoint the problem. I have a feeling that I will find the problem in the latest Net Framework update or the ALLMIGHTY SP2.

I have this problem with Roxio Easy Media Creator 7 - also in IE when accessing AVI formats. This is a bug with XP (SP2).

Ok, I will now have to eat crow because I found the cause of the problem on my PC and it was not anything to do with Microsoft. I updated my nivida and VIA drivers and I have not had one single occurance of (the memory could not be read) problem. Also before I posted this I have also given this OS (XP Pro SP2) a real good heavy duty run and overloaded it (on and of for 6 hours now)with open applications to the max (to the point where the PC was just about to stop from lack of memory resources) to try to get it to bring up the error and it has not.I use to always get it when I shut down windows every time without fail,,but not any more. This may not work on your PC's but it has with mine. Good luck
