The finish dates of completed tasks in a Gantt chart are displayed differently in Project Web Access 2003 than in Project 2003

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. You create a Gantt chart in Microsoft Office Project 2003 Professional Edition. Then, you use the Collaborate menu to publish the Gantt chart to Microsoft Office Project Server 2003. When you view the Gantt chart in Microsoft Office Project Web Access 2003, the finish dates of completed tasks are displayed differently than in Project 2003. You experience one or both the following symptoms:
  • Project Web Access 2003 determines the percentage of completion of tasks by including all calendar days. This includes nonworking days.
  • Project Web Access 2003 incorrectly displays the completed part of split tasks.

CAUSE

Project 2003 uses a project calendar to schedule tasks. You can set working time and nonworking time for the project calendar. By default, nonworking time includes weekends. Project 2003 calculates start dates and finish dates for tasks according to working and nonworking time that is specified in the project calendar.

The Gantt chart in Project Web Access 2003 does not use a project calendar. The finish dates of tasks are determined by calculating all days, from the start date to the finish date.

WORKAROUND

Configure Project 2003 to display the percentage of completion of tasks by including all calendar days. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Start Project 2003 Professional Edition, and then open your project.
  2. On the Format menu, click Bar Styles.
  3. Under the To column in the Task row, click Physical % Complete, and then click OK.
After you use this method, Project 2003 calculates and displays the finish dates of tasks in the Gantt chart as follows:
Finish date = Start date + Duration
For example, if the start date and the duration are set to Tuesday at 5:00 P.M., the finish date is set to Wednesday at 8:00 A.M. If the finish date falls on a nonworking day, the finish date is set to the next working day in Project 2003.

There may still be some differences between how the finish dates of tasks are displayed in Project 2003 and in Project Web Access 2003. The finish dates of tasks in the Gantt chart in Project Web Access 2003 also show the percentage of completion of a task. Additionally, the finish date may be displayed differently in working days of a split task. To view the finish date of a split task in a Gantt chart in Project Web Access 2003, try scrolling left and right. Additionally, to view the percentage of completion of a task, click Zoom In to change the time scale, and then scroll left and right.

  • Microsoft Office Project Server 2003
  • Microsoft Office Project Web Access
