"Connection Error: 10057” error message when you try to connect to the Lacerte Web site or to download updates of the Lacerte Tax program in SBS 2000 or in SBS 2003

SUMMARY

When you try to connect to the Lacerte Web site or to download updates of the Lacerte Tax program on your computer that is running ISA Server and that is based on either version 2000 or version 2003 of Microsoft Small Business Server (SBS), you receive an error message. This problem occurs when an individual port number is not defined for an inbound and outbound protocol. In this scenario, an individual IP address is also not defined for exceptional proxy settings. This article describes how to define an individual port number and an individual IP address in the local area network (LAN) settings.

SYMPTOMS

Assume that the Lacerte Tax program is installed and configured on your computer that is running Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server and that is either SBS 2000-based or is SBS 2003-based. When you try to connect to the Lacerte Web site or to download updates, you receive the following error message:

CAUSE

This problem occurs because ISA Server must have a customized configuration to work with the Lacerte Tax program.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, follow these steps:
  1. Define the inbound and outbound protocols. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft ISA Server, and then click ISA Management.
    2. Under Internet Security and Acceleration Server, expand Server and Arrays, and then expand the computer that is running ISA Server.
    3. Expand Policy Elements, right-click Protocol Definitions, point to New, and then click Definition.
    4. On the first page of the New Protocol Definition Wizard, type the name that you want in the Protocol definition name box, and then click Next.
    5. Edit the settings as follows.

    6. Click No in response to the "Do you want to use secondary connections?" message, and then click Next.
    7. Click Finish.
    8. The new protocol entry appears in the right pane. Right-click the new protocol, and then click Properties. On the General tab, type the protocol description in the Description (optional) box, and then click OK.
    9. Repeat steps d through i to define the following port numbers for the inbound protocol:
      1275
      1277
      1278
      10020
      10030
      10040
      10050
      10051
      10052
      10060
      10070
      10099
    10. Repeat steps d through i, but configure the Direction setting for each protocol definition to Outbound.
  2. Verify the Application Filter settings. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft ISA Server, and then click ISA Management.
    2. Under Internet Security and Acceleration Server, expand Server and Arrays, and then expand the computer that is running ISA Server.
    3. Locate and then expand Extensions.
    4. Click Application Filters.
    5. In the right pane, right-click HTTP Redirector Filters, and then click Properties.
    6. Click the Options tab, click Send to requested Web Server, and then click OK.
    7. In the right pane, right-click SOCKS V4 Filter, and then click Properties.
    8. On the General tab, click to select the Enable this filter check box.
    9. Click the Options tab, and then type 1080 in the Port box.
  3. Configure the Outgoing Web Request connection settings. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Under Internet Security and Acceleration Server, right-click the computer that is running ISA Server, and then click Properties.
    2. Click the Outgoing Web Requests tab, click to clear the Ask unauthenticated users for identification check box, and then click OK.
  4. Configure individual IP addresses as proxy exceptions list in your LAN settings. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Start Microsoft Internet Explorer.
    2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
    3. Click the Connections tab, and then click LAN Settings.
    4. In Local Area Network (LAN) Settings dialog box, click Advanced under Proxy Server.
    5. In the Proxy Settings dialog box, type the following IP addresses under Exceptions:
      198.31.208.130;
      198.31.208.131;
      198.31.208.132;
      198.31.208.133;
      198.31.208.134;
      198.31.208.135;
      198.31.208.136;
      198.31.208.137;
      198.31.208.138;
      198.31.208.139;
      198.31.208.140;
      198.31.208.141;
      198.31.208.142;
      198.31.208.143;
      198.31.208.144;
      198.31.208.145;
      208.240.240.200
      Note You must type all 17 IP addresses and use a semicolon (;) after each entry.
    6. Click OK three times.
