SYMPTOMS

When you try to locate a Web site from a hyperlink inside a Microsoft Word 2002 document, you may receive the following error message:
Unable to open [URL of Hyperlink]. A security problem has occurred.
The navigation fails, and the item that is requested does not appear.

CAUSE

The problem occurs if the navigation requires additional user interaction to complete the connection to the Web server before the item download is requested. Typically, this problem occurs for any one of the following reasons:
  • If Basic Authentication for the Web site is required.
  • If a security alert dialog box, such as the dialog box that is used to validate the server certificate is required.
  • If the dialog box to select a client certificate to complete a Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) connection is required.
These dialog boxes do not appear. Therefore, these dialog boxes prevent the navigation from successfully completing. The error message states that the cause of the problem is a security problem, such as a trust problem during the connection process.

RESOLUTION

For users of Microsoft Word 2002 a design change has been made that permits the security dialog boxes to appear so that you can provide the additional information and then complete the navigation.

How to obtain the hotfix

This issue is fixed in the Word 2002 post-Service Pack 3 Hotfix Package May 5, 2004. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
830807  (http://kbalertz.com/Feedback.aspx?kbNumber=830807/ ) Description of the Word 2002 post-Service Pack 3 hotfix package: May 5, 2004
After you install this hotfix, follow the steps that are listed in the "More Information" section of this article to set the EnableDialogInHLinkNav registry key and to activate the hotfix.

MORE INFORMATION

Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To activate this hotfix, follow these steps:
  1. Quit Microsoft Word 2002.
  2. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
  3. Locate and then click to select the following registry key:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Word\Options
  4. After you select the key that is specified in step 3, point to New on the Edit menu, and then click DWORD.
  5. Type EnableDialogInHLinkNav, and then press ENTER.
  6. Right-click EnableDialogInHLinkNav, and then click Modify.
  7. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
  8. On the File menu, click Exit to quit Registry Editor.

Steps to reproduce the problem

To reproduce the problem you must have a Web site that is set to require an SSL connection and Basic Authentication. In this example, https://localhost/ is used as the Web server. You have to replace this Web server with the URL to your own Web server.
  1. Start Word 2002.

By default, a new document is created.
  2. On the Insert menu, click Hyperlink. Type a hyperlink to another Word document that is on a Web server that requires Basic Authentication.

For example, you may use the following:

    https://localhost/securesite/ThisDocRequiresBasicAuth.doc
  3. Click OK to create the hyperlink in the current Word document.
  4. Pause on the hyperlink, and then press CTRL+CLICK to try to open the document.

The error message that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section appears.

These comments are relevant. The same problem occurs in all MS Office applications. This fix should address all of them. How should this problem be fixed if you receive this error in MS Excel? Isn't there a solution that would rectify the problem for MS Word and MS Excel and MS PowerPoint?
