Things to consider when you search SharePoint Portal Server 2003 for content that contains international characters

INTRODUCTION

This article contains information about some things to consider when you search Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 for content that contains international characters such as accented characters or diacritical marks. This article also discusses searching for content that contains certain Unicode characters.

MORE INFORMATION

When you search your SharePoint Portal Server 2003 portal site for content, you cannot limit your search to return only content that contains accented characters or diacritical marks. When you search the portal site for a keyword that contains one or more accented characters or diacritical marks, SharePoint Portal Server returns the accented form of the word and the unaccented form of the word in the search results. For example, if you search the portal site for the word "caché" (without the quotation marks), content that contains the word "caché" (without the quotation marks) and content that contains the word "cache" (without the quotation marks) is returned in the search results.

Additionally, you cannot search the portal site for the following content:
  • Content that contains Unicode Chinese, Japanese, and Korean (CJK) Extension B characters.
  • Content that contains Unicode CJK Extension A characters in a text file that is encoded by using GB18030.
For more information about how to manage search settings in SharePoint Portal Server, see the "Managing Search Settings" topic in the "Administration" chapter of the Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Administrator's Guide. The Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Administrator's Guide (Administrator's Help.chm) is located in the Docs folder in the root of the SharePoint Portal Server 2003 CD.
