SYMPTOMS

In your server farm deployment of Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003, you may find that it takes a longer time than expected for SharePoint Portal Server 2003 to crawl content in the portal site, including content in Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services Web sites that are contained in the portal site.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the gatherer component of SharePoint Portal Server 2003 filters URLs that do not contain file name extensions by using a single-threaded filter pool. For example, URLs that represent documents that are attached to list items in a document library do not contain the file name extension of the document. Performance of crawls decreases when the gatherer component associates URLs with a single-threaded filter.

RESOLUTION

This problem was first fixed in a hotfix that is now contained in a service pack. If you installed the latest SharePoint Portal Server 2003 service pack, you do not have to install the hotfix.

Service pack information

This problem is corrected in SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Service Pack 1.
