Information that is contained in the Manager field of a user profile is removed in SharePoint Portal Server 2003
When you run either a full import or an incremental import of
user profiles from the Active Directory directory service, the information that is contained in the Manager

removed, and the Manager field is left empty.
This problem was first fixed in a hotfix that is now contained in a service pack. If you installed the latest SharePoint Portal Server 2003 service pack, you do not have to install the hotfix.

Description of the SharePoint Portal Server 2003 post-Service Pack 1 hotfix package: September 17, 2004
This problem occurs when the Manager field of a user profile in Active
Directory is empty. When you perform an incremental import of user profile
information, the blank Manager field overwrites the existing information in
the SharePoint Portal Server 2003 user profiles.
Microsoft
has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed
in the "Applies to" section. This problem was first corrected in SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Service Pack 2.
