How to run the Microsoft CRM-Exchange E-Mail Router without domain administrator credentials
The Microsoft® CRM-Exchange E-Mail Router (the Router) is a software component that provides an interface between the Microsoft CRM system and Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server or Microsoft Exchange Server 2003. When installed on an Exchange 2000 server or Exchange 2003 server, the Router transfers inbound e-mail to the Microsoft CRM system.
According to the
Microsoft Business Solutions CRM Implementation Guide version 1.2, the account used to run the Router queue service must have the following user rights:
- Be a member of the Domain Administrators group.
- Be a member of local administrator group on both the Microsoft Exchange Server and the Microsoft CRM Server computers.
Installing the Router
The user installing the Router must have domain administrator credentials. However, domain administrator credentials are not required to run the Router following installation. The information in the following list is valid for Microsoft CRM Server and Microsoft Exchange Server running on separate Microsoft Windows® servers. This information is not valid for Microsoft Small Business Server 2000 and Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003. Also, this information is not applicable if a domain controller is running on the same computer as the Exchange Server.
- Microsoft CRM Server Application: The user installing the Router must be a Microsoft CRM licensed user and can be assigned any Microsoft CRM user role.
- Microsoft CRM Server Computer: The user installing the Router must be a local administrator. The Remote Registry Service must also be started to enable remote access to the registry during installation.
- Microsoft Exchange Server Computer: The user installing the Router must be a local administrator.
Running the Router
It is possible to use an account that is not a domain administrator to run the Router queue service. The information in the following list is valid for Microsoft CRM Server and Microsoft Exchange Server running on separate Windows servers. This information is not valid for Microsoft Small Business Server 2000 and Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003. Also, this information is not applicable if a domain controller is running on the same computer as the Exchange Server.
- Microsoft CRM Server Application: The account used to run the Router queue service must be a Microsoft CRM licensed user and can be assigned the System Administrator Microsoft CRM user role.
- Microsoft Exchange Server Computer: The account used to run the Router service must be a local administrator.
Schema Changes
Microsoft CRM does not require nor make changes to the Active Directory® schema. To enable a Microsoft CRM user to receive unsolicited e-mail in the form of e-mail activities in Microsoft CRM, an administrator must set the value of any built-in extension property of the user object to the string "CrmEmailEnabled". See the
Microsoft CRM Implementation Guide for more information about this topic. Typically, setting an extension property of a user object requires domain administrator credentials.

Community Feedback System
Very often, it takes hours to solve a problem. Very often, you've looked high
and low, and have tried a lot of solutions. When you finally found it, chances
are, it was because someone else helped you. Here's your chance to give back.
Use our community feedback tool to let others know what worked for you and what
didn't.
Please also understand that the community feedback system is not warranted to be
correct, it's simply a system that we've built to let people try and help each
other. If something in a feedback response doesn't make sense to you, or you're
not comfortable making changes that the feedback talks about (like registry
edits), please consult a professional.
Thank you for using kbAlertz.com Feedback System.
