"Render failed" error message when you try to edit or upload a document to a document library in SharePoint Team Services from Microsoft

SYMPTOMS

You may find that you cannot change a document or upload a document to an existing document library in your SharePoint Team Services from Microsoft Web site. When you click Edit to change a document that is stored in a document library, or when you click Upload document to upload a new document to the document library, you may receive an error message that is similar to the following:
Render Failed
Additionally, if you click Modify settings and columns to view the settings for the document library, the value that appears in the Comments column may appear as "type unknown" (without the quotation marks).

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the following conditions are true, in the order that they are presented:
  • You run the SharePoint Configuration Wizard (Stswiz.exe) on the server to configure SharePoint Team Services for use with Microsoft Project Server 2002.
  • You create one or more document libraries.
  • You remove Microsoft Project Server 2002 from the server.
In this situation, you experience the symptoms that are mentioned in the "Symptoms" section with document libraries that were created after Microsoft Project Server 2002 was installed on the server and after the SharePoint Configuration Wizard was run.

This problem occurs if the Fldtypes.xml file that is located in the following folder is replaced with the original SharePoint Team Services version of the file:
Drive:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\50\Templates\1033\Xml
The version of the Fldtypes.xml file that is included with SharePoint Team Services has a created date of Thursday, February 15, 2001, and is 75.2 kilobytes (KB). The version of the Fldtypes.xml file that is included with Microsoft Project Server 2002 has a created date of Thursday, March 14, 2002 and is 111 KB.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, replace the Fldtypes.xml file that is located in the following folder with the version of the Fldtypes.xml file that is located on the Microsoft Project Server 2002 CD:
Drive:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\50\Templates\1033\Xml
The Fldtypes.xml file is located in the Support\PJSharPT\Tmplts\1033\Xml folder of the Microsoft Project Server 2002 CD.

MORE INFORMATION

When you run the SharePoint Configuration Wizard (Stswiz.exe) to configure SharePoint Team Services for use with Microsoft Project Server 2002 , the template that is used for the document libraries of all SharePoint Team Services Web sites on the server is changed to include a Comments column. Microsoft Project Server 2002 backs up the original SharePoint Team Services files and stores the files in the Drive:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\50\PSBackup folder on the hard disk. All the document libraries that are created after you run the SharePoint Configuration Wizard use the new template. Document libraries that are created before you run the SharePoint Configuration Wizard and document libraries that are created after you remove Microsoft Project Server from the server do not use the new template.

APPLIES TO
  • Microsoft SharePoint Team Services
  • Microsoft Project Server 2002

This did resolve my issue, first thanks MS for creating a sp (oxpsp1) that runs up the configuration wizard. However in order to get the fix working I had to reboot the server.
